It’s the 21st century. We still don’t have flying cars, a colony on Mars or teleportation devices, but oh boy have we come a long way in envisioning stories, imagining up worlds, and translating what we’ve imagined to the screen. The sudden surge of technological advancement has translated to many incredible features being available in the special effects department, giving the ninth art that boost it needed to put to the screen what naturally flows on the comic book pages, and not lose in the believability department while doing so. We’ve come a long way from the old-timey BAM’s, KAPOW’s and VRONK’s of the well-loved Batman show with Adam West. The superhero films we see today take our breath away on every level. Finally, comic book fans (and everyone!) can witness the eternal struggles of their favourite ever-vigilant protectors of justice against the dark, ingenious arch-nemeses. Who of us hasn’t wished to attend Xavier’s school for gifted children or join the Avengers? Now we can, at least for an hour-and-a-half!
Superheroes are rapidly gaining popularity
Lately, we are increasingly being blessed with more and more awesome superhero movies! Whether you’re a fan of the slightly darker, grittier DC universe or the heroic, jovial-but-serious-when-the-going-gets-rough world of Marvel we’re happy to say you’ll have something to look forward to in 2018. The Marvel side of things is definitely more represented this year, with movies such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix hitting theatres. DC will only bring us Aquaman this time around, but we’re nonetheless excited to see Jason Momoa in his aquatic magnificence again. Which 2018 Superhero movie are you most excited about? The competition is fierce, but whichever film comes out on top (according to the box office, the critics, or whoever!) we, the fans, win, as we get to watch our favourite heroes’ adventures on the big screen, and in 3D if we so choose. This year we’ll also watch some films that aren’t necessarily superhero movies but could fit the bill, depending on how you look at it. Among thee are Tomb Raider, Ready Player One, Alita: Battle Angel and the animated Incredibles 2, as well as an animated Spider-Man feature!
Do clothes make the man?
Who is Batman? Is it Bruce Wayne? Well… Yes, but also no! Bruce Wayne has all the skills Batman does, but without the suit and equipment, he’s just another rich boy who’s mastered 127 martial arts, can ninja-rope up and down buildings while seducing every temptress in sight and then resisting her temptations. Okay, well, maybe not just another rich boy, then, but you get our point! Occasionally clothes do make the man. Or do they always? Sometimes they’re more than just men (and women, ladies, we haven’t forgotten you), but they still have to wear clothes like the rest of us. So, does Superman wear a raincoat for men? I mean, the droplets just bounce off of his steel-like physique, don’t they? Superman might not, but Clark Kent surely does. Just make sure not to make the same mistake Captain America with his question to Tony Stark. “Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?” His answer? “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.” Ouch, superhero burn!
